    Re: Why is PHP bad

Speaking as someone for whom programming doesn't come naturally, I love PHP. I'm probably one of those "newbies" making mistakes all the time, but I'm really trying my best to do things efficiently...
  2. Re: Why does FAT32 suck so bad

Does it take that long even if you copy from the command line?

    Re: Ubuntu on Chromebook?

I've found Crouton to be the best way to do Ubuntu on a Chromebook:

    Unfortunate, anything involving...

    Re: Cannot install Wine 1.7

Sounds as if you have some conflicting repositories. Can you post the output of these commands?
    sudo apt-get update
    cat /etc/apt/sources.list

Re: Bill Gates a champion for openness!?

Bill Gates isn't CEO of Microsoft any more, but even Microsoft without him claims to be changing.

Primer on IP cameras and DVR'ing?

I don't know if this is the right section for this (mods, feel free to move to somewhere you deem appropriate).

I work for a non-profit, and they are interested in setting up a camera to monitor...

    Re: Where's the Old Crew?

I can't speak for anyone else, but I think I qualify as part of "the Old Crew." When I started on here in 2005, I was working a different type of job, so I had a lot of mental energy in the evenings...
  8. Re: Smartphone questions (considering getting one)

Well, there are actually two kinds of unlocked. One kind is SIM-unlocked, which means it's not specifically tied to a carrier. So in theory if I have a SIM-unlocked GSM phone, I can take it from AT&T...
  9. Re: Smartphone questions (considering getting one)

I'm not saying you necessarily should go Android, but you should at least make an informed choice if you decide to not go with it. The Moto X does not have any bottlenecks, and with no contract is...

Poll: Re: Beating Gmail and the rest

I'm not sure I really get this idea. Whom are you sending these emails to? All the recipients also host their email in these secure-bunker servers?

If you're sending to people with normal email...

Re: Change owner of a partition

Open up a terminal and paste in
sudo chown -R bob:bob /dev/sdc5 assuming bob is your username in Ubuntu. This let's you take ownership of the Ext4 partition on that drive.
  14. Re: Anyone else getting stuck when trying to reboot (14.04)?

It may be the same principle, though. For me, it was waiting for the network shares to unmount. For you, it may be waiting for something else that's happening in the wrong order.

    Any experts out...
  15. Re: Anyone else getting stuck when trying to reboot (14.04)?

I didn't change the wait time or anything besides what's in post #11 of this thread.
  16. Re: Anyone else getting stuck when trying to reboot (14.04)?

Looks as if someone else already reported it (a while ago):

  17. Re: Anyone else getting stuck when trying to reboot (14.04)?

No, I haven't. The weird thing is that the solution above works for me, but it was originally posted for a much older version of Ubuntu. And I didn't have this problem until Trusty.

    Did that...
  18. Re: Anyone else getting stuck when trying to reboot (14.04)?

Okay, it was this for me:
  19. Re: Anyone else getting stuck when trying to reboot (14.04)?

Nope. In fact, I recently upgraded another virtualized server from 13.10 to 14.04, and it's exhibiting the same behavior.

If I send a Control-Alt-Delete event to the machine, it will reboot, but a...

    Paste in
sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list delete the first line (control-k deletes). Then save (control-x).

[ubuntu] Re: Not upgrading Ubuntu 13.10 to 14.04

It's not really an issue or upgrading or not. The issue here is you are not able to reach the software repositories.

[SOLVED] Re: Adding files to /var/www

When you say paste, do you mean with a point-and-click user interface? If so, you can try
gksudo nautilus & If you're on a command-line only server, you can edit that file using sudo:
    sudo nano...
