i've heard that someone had similar problem as you and saved his partitions with Testdisk. I didn't try that program so i don't know how he did it, but you can try ;)

have you tried this:
open terminal then type
gconf-editor
then Applications > Metacity > General and choose compositing_manager
it could help if you didn't do it ;)

insert LiveCD and boot,then open Terminal and type this (line by line)
sudo grub
find /boot/grub/stage1
(hd0,0) <--- THIS IS RESULT!!!! (something like that)
then type this:
root (hd0,0)

then you'll get result ( something like (hd0,0) )

the best feeling is when something doesn't work and you spend 2-3 days in searching for drivers and solve problem on your own... you feel like god XD
you can install other Linux distributions ;)
see linux Mint (i heard that it's excellent, something like "Ubuntu with codecs")...
get LiveCD of any distribution you wish and try it ;)

i also had problems with my printer (canon pixma ip1600) but i found similar driver on internet amd detail description of installation and it works!
you should try to find drivers, can't loose...
someone who manually downloaded new kernel reported problems with it so i think the best option is to let Update manager to update kernel when it's ready
you have to be more precise with describing your configuration and version of Ubuntu becouse it's the way to get help more quickly ;)
