[SOLVED] Re: Getting serious about my home network

I'm sorry, but that's exactly backwards to what I want to do--and the confusion is probably related to my very confused OP. I want the DC to be a Linux box, and the domain capable of handling either...

[SOLVED] Re: Getting serious about my home network

I went through the steps on these--it worked to get my mount points back (and thank you ve3ry much for that), but doesn't take care of the other stuff I want to do.

    I've seen that ... and I'm...

[SOLVED] Getting serious about my home network

Mods, if this needs to be moved elsewhere (How-To, Absolute Beginner, third-party, or whatever), please feel free.

OK, so I have a mixed home network of XP Pro and Ubuntu machines--five users, six...
  4. Re: Only 1.15% of people with computers connected to the internet use Linux.

I'm actually including install and transition--which is probably an unfair comparison on my part. Aw, heck, the only "intuitive" user interface is the nipple--everything else is learned.
  5. Re: Only 1.15% of people with computers connected to the internet use Linux.

You and I both know Grandmans who can use it--how many Grandmas want to?

Well, whether or not you like it, that's yet another reason why Linux is in the basement of market share--Grandma...
  6. Re: Only 1.15% of people with computers connected to the internet use Linux.

Actually, for most of the market, they are "grandma-ready." Sound works out of the box--something Linux has only recently conquered. The most common codecs, web videos, compression algorithms,...
  7. Re: Only 1.15% of people with computers connected to the internet use Linux.

    Precisely.

Linux has only ~1-2% market share? So what? Market share is not that big a deal unless you have a personal beef against Microsoft or Apple. Market share does nothing to indicate the...
  8. Re: Only 1.15% of people with computers connected to the internet use Linux.

I'd love to see more people using Linux, but not to put too fine a point on the issue, most of the computer user market isn't ready for Linux. Ubuntu is one of the people-friendliest distributions...

    Surfing
    Bittorrent
I want to start using it for music recording again, only in Linux, not Windows.

[ubuntu] Do I need all the bells and whistles?

I've done some audio work in Windows, and want to see if I can translate the workflow into Linux. I have some examples on the web (1, 2, 3, login required but it's free, and I've released my stuff...

I have some Linux experience, but am a complete newbie with realtime kernels and with audio in Linux.

  14. Poll: Re: Penut butter sandwhich: Jelly on top, or on the bottom?

I can't tell the top of the sandwich from the bottom of the sandwich. Does that make me full of fail?

  20. [ubuntu] Re: Ubuntu doesn't want to play nice with my wireless

Success! Blacklisting the older Atheros drivers (per step 1 of the linked page) allowed me to connect.

  21. [ubuntu] Re: Ubuntu doesn't want to play nice with my wireless

I have a troubleshooting path: I found the following:

    Wish me luck!
  22. [ubuntu] [Resolved] Ubuntu doesn't want to play nice with my wireless

Yet another one for the list....

HP Pavillion dv6000. Clean install of Intrepid, and I added the headers and backports. ifconfig gives me eth0 and lo, but nothing for wireless.

    [ubuntu] Re: Wireless Help

    That should be:

    sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-intrepid

The last word ("intrepid") was misspelled.
  24. [ubuntu] Re: system runs slow and seems to have glitches

Do you have the specs for your computer? That will go a long way to deciding a troubleshooting path.

    [ubuntu] Re: LiveCD?

Okay, here are a couple of things to try:

1: Consider downloading the CD again. It sounds like you're using the same CD you downloaded a year ago--Ubunty has had a major release in the last year....
