I've tried the nvidia-xorg package, niv-current, and getting the specific one for my driver on nvidia.com, but it all just keeps freezing on the login screen.
I'm running it on a 2010 Macbook 7.1
It's r8712u. Could they both be different versions of r8712u?

Moreover, this prevents my on-board driver from working, how do I reverse that?

I's unfortunate that they don't care or know. Most people just downloaded these programs and use them, they don't care about the availability of the source code or any other freedom.
The average user doesn't have any strong notion of programming so naturally there's indifference towards the concept of free software.
