    I've come to the conclusion that DisplayPort is the way to go. I got hold of a cable and it auto detected & worked instantly. As far as I can see, those USB adaptors are a non starter.

    A command I use to analyse where space is being used is
    du -sk * | sort -n which will report, in size order, where the highest usage is in the directory it's run from.
