I've bookmarked that page - thanks, Andrew. The configuration probably does need some fine tuning.
Just tried the first option, and totally scared the living cr*p out of myself rebooting.
Time to run away and hide in the proverbial aardvark burrow. :)
Opted for reboot into the standard...
After using a standard 12.04, after several months I finally noticed the login choice button (!), and tried the various user interfaces.
Having installed various programs like k3b, I'd like to...
Great to see you got a result, erafael! I was getting annoyed enough spoiling blank DVDs, so wasting blu-rays must be worse.
I had a similar error, and ended up running a thing called k3bsetup which gets installed with k3b. A dialogue appears; you select what it recommends for the dvd drive and the programs. You are asked...
Thanks, papibe and sisco311, for the instant replies.
That worked perfectly!
Since I always end up running a command-line Terminal before long, I thought I would add one to the start-up programs. I added an entry called Terminal with the command being /bin/bash - this is in...
I used LAME to convert the mp3s to CBR 128 kbit simple stereo, and that seemed to fix it. I still don't really understand what the problem was, but the workaround is good enough!
Will mark as...
Thanks for that, Cheesemill, I didn't know about mplayer.
I got
mplayer -identify Daphne_Du_Maurier_The_Birds_Episode_3.mp3
MPlayer svn r34540 (Ubuntu), built with gcc-4.6 (C) 2000-2012...
For a while I have been using get-iplayer to listen to radio on an mp3 player. All was fine until I tried the audios on my Sansa Fuze+. They play, but the fast forward doesn't work. (It scrolls to +1...
That's what I hoped. Thanks!
Hi Cheesemill, I installed 12.04, and have since accepted all the updates on offer. Do I now have 12.04.1, or something less good?
12.04 is an "LTS" edition, which means it will get long-term support for 5 years. If you are just trying it out of curiosity, this is probably of no concern to you.
I can repeatably get it to appear for ~ 5 seconds by hitting the go/pause key on the top of my keyboard - the key that looks like this:

My laptop is a Sony VAIO and the keyboard a...
Your mileage may vary, but I couldn't get brasero to work properly. I installed k3b instead, and it worked like a dream.
Ganga, you may need to download something that's specific to your graphic card.
I had to install the "NVIDIA X Server Settings" control panel, and then I could control the brightness on this Sony...
Thanks, Paddy and tartalo.
Linux CLI is going to suit me.
It seems k3b installed cdrdao behind the scenes, so I've got it already! Time for some experimenting.
I'll mark this thread as solved.
Aahhhh! I had no idea that these schisms existed. I didn't even notice the differences in user interface. k3b did the job, so it will receive good feedback that doesn't mention Brasero.
The...
For the most part, I've been happy to use the default applications. I've never got anywhere with Thunderbird, but that's just me, I think. Whatever I finally pick for email, it can't possibly be...
Ah, useful links, especially for a scripting fiend.
Saved for tomorrow.
It's interesting to know that shift and tilt corrections are available.
While I was working out how to do do basic jpeg downscaling, I was reading about ImageMagick parameters, and was amazed by...
Playing with shell scripts, I found out about nano almost accidentally. What a cute little editor, that seems to respect your selected terminal font size.
I'm over 50 now, and a sworn enemy of...
Ah, that's what I thought you meant, Red Rat. I haven't tried it yet.
My late unlamented Vista installation had a ton of batch files on it, so I've been having fun learning the art of shell...
I had the same situation on a Sony laptop, that I solved by installing the control panel for the proprietary display hardware (called "NVIDIA X Server Settings"). The brightness keys still didn't...
