    Poll: Re: Minecraft

I decided to uninstall it by the time I realised it was becoming more addictive than my Civilization, Dwarf Fortress, Minesweeper and coffee habits combined. Nowadays I try to steer clear of...
  2. Re: Ubuntu Tweak Ends Development

I suspect it has to do with Canonical going Jimbo Wales for your pocket change. A despicable move and one that's likely to alienate the target audience.

  4. Re: Major Differences between Unix and Linux?

UNIX isn't an operating system, it's a specification. You can pay to get an official certificate saying that your operating system is a UNIX (which is to say, it meets the specification), which, for...

    Re: Your Favorite Non-Debian/Ubuntu Distro?

You can certainly set it up to be that way, although it's still a "high-maintenance" distro compared to Ubuntu. Once you're used to how it works, it's a lot less hassle.

    Re: Your Favorite Non-Debian/Ubuntu Distro?

You can set it up so that the system itself is much simpler than ubuntu - ie, fewer layers of abstraction, less services running to accomplish the same thing, etc. However, no matter how hard you...

    Re: Your Favorite Non-Debian/Ubuntu Distro?

This, without any doubt. In its own way, it's much simpler than Ubuntu - by rejection the notion of simplicity of learning the system in favour of simplicity of the system itself.
  8. Re: Help me Decide: Samsung Galaxy S III 32GB vs iPhone 4S 32GB

    Which one...

Re: Just a shot in the dark

I'm talking about GNU/Linux, which was intended from the beginning to be a Free UNIX clone. I'm aware of the origins of the Linux kernel, but the OS as a whole is supposed to be UNIX-like.

Re: Just a shot in the dark

UNIX isn't a single OS, it's a specification. An OS that is certified to conform to that specification is referred to as "a UNIX" (plural "Unices" or "Unixen").

Re: Just a shot in the dark

You obviously have no idea what it means for an operating system to be a UNIX. Mac OSX has received the open brand UNIX 03 certification, that makes it a UNIX, just like AIX, Solaris, HP/UX and other...

Re: Just a shot in the dark

I thought the certification means OSX is a UNIX, whereas GNU/Linux is "UNIX-like"?

Poll: Re: Spending money on coffee shops..

On a more topical note, I'm absolutely disgusted by what they're trying to sell as "coffee" in these shops. Myself, I just take a .5l cup of boiled water with a tablespoon of finely ground beans.

Poll: Re: Poll: Do you take public transportation?

Tell that to the walking biological weapons I always seem to notice in the vicinity of bus and train stops.

Really, this isn't rocket science: If you're sick, stay away from crowded places.

Poll: Re: Poll: Do you take public transportation?

I can definitely relate to this. The public transportation system is perceived as such low status here, most people who can afford to would probably avoid it even if it weren't inferior to every...

Really? You think you people who trust a stone-age culture to predict the end of the world will be swayed by evidence? You must be new to humanity.

No. The trains are never on time, the buses are crowded full of smelly people and would require me to walk to/from bus stops, not to mention neither are properly heated in the winter or air...

Because why not? I'm still hoping to one day be able to use a fully GNU-based OS, preferably with the HURD kernel and Emacs as the userland.
