[kubuntu] Re: System won't boot, beeps

Got hit by this problem too on a lemu2 - dust in the fan as well. Funny, it's the first time I get this on any of the laptops I've had.

    [ubuntu] Re: System76 lemur + 11.04 crashing

Probably you've solved this, but check http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1269508 (dust bunny in fan). Worked for me.

[ubuntu] Re: Unable to start JACK in Oneiric x64.

This just hit me too. Everything worked fine in oneiric a couple of weeks ago, so this is recent breakage.

The crash seems to be from libffado, which is a firewire library. I just did

[ubuntu] Re: [Natty] Empathy slow to open chat window

It turned out that telepathy-logger had hung, using 100% CPU. Killing telepathy-logger resolved the problem. I don't know if it will come back, though.

[ubuntu] Re: [Natty] Empathy slow to open chat window

Going through the output from "EMPATHY_DEBUG=all empathy" I see this at the place where it takes most of the time between the user trying to open the chat window and the window opening (including one...

[ubuntu] Re: [Natty] Empathy slow to open chat window

By any chance, do you have chat logs disabled? My girlfriend is seeing this and I'm not, and this is the only difference in empathy's configuration.
  7. [all variants] Re: [howto] tweaking a livecd in order to blacklist offending kernel modules

I get the problem usually after several hours of uptime, I don't think it's related to the boot-up process.

Perhaps this is the reason why it didn't make it into Intrepid? And us mentioning...
  8. [all variants] Re: [howto] tweaking a livecd in order to blacklist offending kernel modules

    Heheh.. good solution.

I'm sticking with Ubuntu, though. It has the big advantage of being very popular, which gets you better support for third-party applications than most other distros and...
  9. [all variants] Re: [howto] tweaking a livecd in order to blacklist offending kernel modules

Hey! I was wondering how your experience with Intrepid is going so far.

On my laptop I do find weirdnesses from time to time. I think I'm having your fan problem too, it happens at random and not...
  10. [ubuntu] Re: Ubuntu/Firefox/Hotmail(Microsoft Live) - Send Mail Bug/Error

Just for the record, you can also bypass this by installing the Windows version of Firefox under Wine. I use the latest Wine from www.winehq.org (now at 1.1.8 ), so I don't know if version 1.0.1 in...
  11. [all variants] Re: [howto] tweaking a livecd in order to blacklist offending kernel modules

I think our laptops are different, then. Mine has an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 card.

I didn't notice any other problems on the laptop, but again my focus was on the network-manager issue, so there...
  12. [all variants] Re: [howto] tweaking a livecd in order to blacklist offending kernel modules

Same laptop, yeah. I've tried again, this time I had a problem with the X server, so I decided no to trust the CD and go with a memory stick, using Unetbootin - very easy to use.

    The X server...
  13. [all variants] Re: [howto] tweaking a livecd in order to blacklist offending kernel modules

I tried the live CD. The only thing I noticed was that network-manager (and its applet) had failed to start, after which I turned off the computer since there was little I could do without an...
  14. [all variants] Re: [howto] tweaking a livecd in order to blacklist offending kernel modules

Ok, I've tried this now. Here is a slightly modified howto which uses sudo only when strictly required, and incorporates some tips from the Ubuntu Wiki page on liveCD customization.

    1. Open a...
  15. [all variants] Re: [howto] tweaking a livecd in order to blacklist offending kernel modules

I haven't tried following your instructions, but I've spotted two little mistakes:

First, by "open a terminal, [alt]-[f2] and type ..." I think you mean "open a terminal by pressing [alt]-[f2] and...
  16. [ubuntu] Re: Usplash switches to text mode during boot after installing another OS

The procedure above worked for me. I had repartitioned my hard drive and had already fixed the UUIDs in /etc/fstab, but didn't even think of checking the resume device (step 4), which indeed pointed...

    Re: Pcsx2

I assume you have compiled pcsx2 from the sources and either copied the contents of the 'bin' directory to another location or moved the binary. The problem is that pcsx2 expects a (hidden)...
  18. [ubuntu] Re: [SOLVED] after todays update, no desktop only a white screen after logging in

I've run into this problem a number of times. The thing to do is to force a re-install of linux-restricted-modules-2.6.xx-xx-generic. If you get access to X via the "Failsafe Terminal", the most...
  19. [ubuntu] Re: Hardy: Screen still goes blank even with power saving set to 'Never'

Does it help if you type the following on the command line before playing video?

    sudo /etc/init.d/laptop-mode stop

You can undo this afterwards with

    sudo /etc/init.d/laptop-mode start
