    This is not really a Ubuntu question, but in Ubuntu you can check the status of wol with ethtool. There must be something similar in Windows in which you can enable wake on lan from the OS.

    That's correct; you could install it on the other machines but it wouldn't be valid. I.e. it would install but updates may not work etc.

    You can use grep to search for contents of files. To remove a lock on a file you can use
    sudo chmod +w. That adds write permissions to the file as its probably read only.
