Most people replying in this thread seem to reject the notion of a BIOS virus.
Please, do some research. For professional hackers, it is a perfect target and other than the CPU, is probably the...
Nor do I intend to. That is a waste of time for me.
How many brickwalls can one person handle?
The virus is irrelevant and not the subject of this thread. Re-flashing the BIOS outside of...
Hi,
The non writeable CD disks were created about a year ago. They are clean.
Yes, I tried 4 distince sets of Windows based software/

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I guess you just like to use the words "Hunt & Peck" because having worked in the computer field for about 25years + for many different companies, I have no idea what...
There is another very interesting topic brought to light from this incident.
Someone I assume representing HP told me that Windows and Ubuntu are so different, that the way they use any given PC's...
This has all been methodically ruled out. :KS
This is DEFINITELY NOT related to a hard drive issue.
Hi Charles,
Things Tried
Ram tested with Memtest.
Harddrive thoroughly tested with Manufacturers Disk utils

Being ridiculously obvious is not very helpful.
Don't you think that was the very first thing a person would try ? ):P
People that jump into threads with their self certified "awesomely...

I think all the "mundane" bases have been adequately covered thank you.
Memory test - Ran that when all this began. (did you read no problems with Linux OS?)
Also - Full harddrive diagnostics...
Because the virus is present again...it writes itself from BIOS (I'm thinking) back to Pagefile.sys
There's nowhere else I can think of it could be coming from.
Totally ZERO wiped...
Correct.
I didn't just make that up.
LOTS of sites like Spamhaus,CountryIPBlocks.net etc that list the top countries from which hacking originate.
The US has also risen to the top.....I just...
Thank you very much. That makes sense now that I understand torrents. I didn't realize I was also advertising that I was sharing the file. I have to admit I was worried there for a while.

Hi,
I would like to discuss the possibility of viruses infecting BIOS. It is on a WinLux Dual boot machine so while Windows is totally affected, I'm also concerned about any effect it may have on...
Hiya !
Today was the first time I used a Torrent client (K-torrent) to download a software package and as soon as I connected to begin downloading, my firewall lit up like a Christmas tree and...
Yes,
you can do this.
However, in my experience, people place far too much faith in virus scanners.
They are mostly effective against viruses that have been out for at least a month or more...
Hey,
I suppose that's another very important question I need to answer....
Can a Windows virus embed itself in the MBR of a Linux install.
In other words, assuming I DO have a virus...
This sounds like the path I would need to take.
My MAIN concern is not destroying my Linux Install.
I also need to make sure this method would remove any potential MBR viruses.
Viruses, Trojans...
I have a Dual Boot machine with Windows Vista on the first partition and Ubuntu 10.04 on the second partition. This is a very common situation with Ubuntu users so I feel this is very much related...

I have a folder MyData on my Desktop and I want to copy all the files...
I did manage to do this.
When I boot now in 10.04 it looks like I'm booting into 9.04.....except for the square box where you actually enter the UN/PW
I may change that back eventually.

I need to run fsck on my 10.04 Ubuntu but I only have a 9.10 Live CD.
Is it ok to run fcsk from the 9.10 Live CD against my 10.04 install ?
thx
Up until I started using 9.04, I used gedit extensively.
Never had a moment's trouble with it.
Now, it seems to be getting worse and worse.
Final word.....
The 9.04 Login and Desktops wer the best looking.
Ever since then Ubuntu has gone with some pretty lame looking pastel-ish...very unattractive Login Splash and Desktop themes.
