Figured this out - this can be solved by restarting the x-server (ctrl-shift-backspace on my computer)
When I try to do sudo pip install llvmlite, I come up with the errors
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -ledit
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lLLVMOProfileJIT

Thanks for the advice guys. After further consideration and reading the replies I decided just to go all the way, 100% SSD. Then the partition becomes a snap and it's much faster. Have a great day!
