    Unhiding the acces point seems to help a lot, dmesg shows no messages so far and downloading the same file keeps being at a constant speed of 1.1 MB/s, but again, why can't it be hidden?

    I "fixed" this too. Just open a vnc server via the terminal using vinagre

    so type something like this:

    $ vinagre 192.168.1.2

    and the screen resolutions are all reset
