Good one. Also have a look at you BIOS and see if there are any Performance/Battery balancing tools that are turned off or on.
Some machines does it though the BIOS others hands it to the OS.

Can't remember which model, but my HP printer / scanner never had problems with Linux. I suppose its also hard to find a unit to test?

Is your mouse USB? i had a similar issue a while ago managed to get the mouse working by unplugging and plugging it back in.
