What graphics card r you using? Did that solve your problem ? If not then boot into recovery mode and then reconfigure your x server. and reboot the system then check the system is fine or not..

You mast have swap for hibernation. You are right that swap is used when the system runs out of ram. But during hibernation the content of ram is written as image in swap area.

This is not exactly an workaround. If your swap partition is not recognized properly during installation , the resume setting in grub configuration will not be done. These manual steps are required...

try djvu ... It is very compact.

Edit the file as I have shown and replace the resume uuid with your swap partition's uuid. I have marked in red.

I think you may have some file system errors in your windows partition. Try to run chkdsk after booting from some msdos rescue program.
