I think you should be able to get back a normal desktop by installing ubuntu-desktop

from the commandline
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

Actually there is no standard lpia version of 8.4 but you can get a lpia 8.4 netbook remix version from here https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UNR/Installation/Hard
