I'm having the same problem. Its really bugging me.
Whenever I ctrl+alt+f1 to the console, it only takes up 25% of the screen space. I would like to take up 100%.
I've tried editing /etc/default/grub then updating grub, but it doesn't do anything.
I fixed it. In the BIOS, there was a setting that adjusted the CPU power when I didn't need it all. I changed it from Automatic to Best Performance and it works fine now.

I ran the acpi -t command a few times, and even when the CPU usage is 100%, the temp ranges from 38 - 42 C. Not bad at all. Strange.
