manual. And have as I mentioned earlier, tried to plug it in the

Actually it is more than a headache. I discovered a blue so
called 10pin (in reality only 9pins) USB adapter on the "floor"
of the chassis. Despite several tries, can't figure out where
was it...

I think the cause must be something else even if one gets stuck in the grub.
I have tried three different hard drives with different versions of Ubuntu.

Very true about timing of the problem cropping up. However,
in my experience installing directly from the browser is not always
helpful.

I had to autoclean and corect ext3 and ext4 in /etc/fstab

I had the same problem. Following the above process was a lucky break. The strangest
thing was that the id provided for "swap" in /etc/fstab did not even exist in blkid!
