Re: Ubuntu cannot compete with OS X or Windows 7

You apparently did not do any research. It is okay, though, I didn't expect it anyway. :) (Dec 2009 ...)

Re: Ubuntu cannot compete with OS X or Windows 7

If you do a little research, you will find that now fewer companies offer Linux versions of their commercial products than three or four years ago, and that various projects have been canceled. Those...

Open source? Of course you get open source software on Windows. Why wouldn't you? All the big open source projects have Windows versions. Firefox, Open Office, Thunderbird, Gimp, Pidgin, Python,...

Re: Ubuntu cannot compete with OS X or Windows 7

You are comparing a 3+ years old original installation CD of Vista to a two months old installation CD of Ubuntu. For a proper comparison, either use a 6.x version of Ubuntu or Windows 7.

    I agree,...

Re: Ubuntu cannot compete with OS X or Windows 7

I skipped most of your post, because we covered this repeatedly already, so I'll just answer the question:

Windows 7 performs better on my main desktop than Ubuntu 9.10 does. Faster, smoother,...

Poll: Re: How should web content & services be funded?

I don't know how significant the World of Goo situation is, though. It seems fairly natural and expected that if you tell people "Here, I have this commercial product and you can have it for as...

Poll: Re: How should web content & services be funded?

I didn't vote, because I feel it depends on the nature of the content and the purpose of the site (and its intent).

Cultural and educational non-profit sites should receive sponsorships or money...

Re: Ubuntu cannot compete with OS X or Windows 7

Really? I used FreeBSD for a couple years around 2005, and it was great even then. There is less hardware support, so Linux is the better choice for my quirkier systems, but I prefer BSD's design and...

Because it performs well, offers high compatibility, I can buy any piece of hardware and expect it to work, it doesn't look like a patchwork carpet when using apps from different sources, gives easy...

Re: If you have Windows XP, why do you use linux?

Linux has a desktop market share of around 1%, and it has been that way for the past two years (no one has exact figures, though), so this system doesn't work all that successfully as long as Linux...

Actually, the Linux core components are, for the most part, developed by companies and employed developers. The contributions from programmers who truly do unpaid work in their spare time is small....

What does age have to do with gaming? I grew up in the 70s, so I'm obviously not a teen either, and I have been video gaming ever since I was one. :)
  25. Re: Recommend me a book for learning the C programming language

I second this. I actually "beta-read" the draft of the first edition before publication. Chris' style is very easy to follow and it's an entertaining, non-scary read for a broad audience.
