  1. [ubuntu] Re: New slowness with manually mounted cifs shares. Gvfs remains wicked fast though.

Hi there. I ended up changing my direction a little bit. I already use SSH everywhere so what I did was tested out gvfs with SFTP. I was quite impressed with it so I ran with it. That's currently...
  2. [ubuntu] Re: SFTP bookmark in Nautilus -- inconsistency

This is a bit of a janky workaround, but to make it more tolerable I made a symlink that resides in my home directory on the server via "ln -s /mnt/vault vault". Thus when I go to the...
  3. [ubuntu] SFTP bookmark in Nautilus -- inconsistency

Hi friends. I'm tinkering with SFTP at the moment and noticed something.

    Some quick context:
    Hostname of server is 'vault'
    Data is located at /mnt/vault

As such my path to connect is...

[server] Re: Search a local domain in 18.04?

Not sure why I didn't think of this sooner, but I decided to take a closer look at seeing if I could leverage my hosts file on the pihole server itself. Even though pihole is serving DHCP to the LAN...

[server] Re: Search a local domain in 18.04?

No dice. :( I tried everything you suggested, including rebooting, however I'm still striking out.

I'm finding this more strange than anything else. Kind of at a loss on what else it could...

[server] Re: Search a local domain in 18.04?

Yes. Host is 18.04. VMs are a mixture between 16.04 and 18.04. All guest VMs do not have issues. I can:

    ping web (18.04)
    ping irc (18.04)
    ping seafile (16.04)
    ping unifi (16.04)

    without...

[server] Re: Search a local domain in 18.04?

Tried that, but no change. :(

Think this is the last time I hop on board with a newer server version. My buddy upgrades to the 2nd latest once the latest comes out (i.e. once 18.04 came out, he...

[server] Re: Search a local domain in 18.04?

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried the above and restarted the server for good measure. Once it came back up, no change.

ping vault = name or service not known
    ping vault.lan = name...

[server] Re: Search a local domain in 18.04?

.1 is my unifi usg. Basically my router. DHCP and dns disabled there.

.2 is PiHole, serving DHCP and dns for the network.

Recently the usg had been employing DHCP with dns being on the PiHole...

[server] Re: Search a local domain in 18.04?

All systems on the network except one uses DHCP. The DHCP server has the domain set to "lan". All other systems respond to ping by their hostname without the domain. For example, my web server...

[server] Re: Search a local domain in 18.04?

Hm, so if I ping vault.lan, it doesn't work. If I ping vault.local, it responds to ping. Clearly it's somehow triggering with local appended. I dug around to see where it may be pulling from, but so...

[server] Re: Search a local domain in 18.04?

Sorry, I wrote that late. The domain is lan. I admittedly didn't try the command from my notes with lan appended because most of the path didn't exist. With netplan being quite different I thought...

[server] Search a local domain in 18.04?

Hi friends. In previous versions of Ubuntu Server, in an effort to get local DNS name resolution working (where I can ping the server by name from another system on my network), I'd run these...
  14. [ubuntu] Re: Libvirt/KVM/Qemu and networking between host/guest

Hm, so something I'm experimenting with at the moment seems to be giving me the behavior I was looking for. Basically I left the main NIC on the guest OS as macvtap bridge. I created a 2nd NIC and...
  15. [ubuntu] Re: Libvirt/KVM/Qemu and networking between host/guest

Hmm, makes me wonder if the macvtap bridge approach presents the same security concerns as a traditional bridge does. May have to dig into this more to see. Thanks for your 2c.
  16. [ubuntu] Re: Libvirt/KVM/Qemu and networking between host/guest

Well if we look at this from a xenial standpoint perhaps I can leverage the insight and adapt it to bionic. To confirm you're suggesting I set up multiple bridges within the base os, then assign each...
  17. [ubuntu] Libvirt/KVM/Qemu and networking between host/guest

Hello friends. I was recently looking into virtualizing some of my home items in an effort to compartmentalize some of my services. To test, I fired everything up on my desktop first. With all of my...
  18. [ubuntu] Issues with a particular HDMI projector on Ubuntu (plot twist: Fedora works fine)

Hi friends. I'm trying (and so far, failing) to find a solution to an issue I'm having. Some context, we have an assortment of different projectors, all HDMI, and an assortment of laptop hardware....
  19. [ubuntu] Re: New slowness with manually mounted cifs shares. Gvfs remains wicked fast though.

Bumping this with the above request. Even though I integrated NFS into my setup, part of me still misses the flexibility of Samba with user based auth.

The TL DR of this is mounting cifs over...
  20. [ubuntu] Re: New slowness with manually mounted cifs shares. Gvfs remains wicked fast though.

Well, I'm possibly on to something. In the mount.cifs man page, I found the cache entry. I did some testing. Specifically regarding *upload* (from client to server) on a gigabit wire, my findings...
  21. [ubuntu] Re: New slowness with manually mounted cifs shares. Gvfs remains wicked fast though.

I've been reading more about this over the last day and have found a few reports earlier in 2017 of folks running in to the same thing. With that, I ask a simple favor.

    Anybody out there who...
  22. [ubuntu] New slowness with manually mounted cifs shares. Gvfs remains wicked fast though.

Hi friends. I have a strange issue that came up seemingly out of no where. A little context to share about the setup.

The network is all gigabit and AC wireless. For this scenario, I focused...
  23. [ubuntu] Re: GTK3 Proposed Patch Version 3.22.25 & KDE Server Side Decorations Patch -- Includ

Thanks. I see that. The Ubuntu-packaged MPV seems to have some issues though in my testing. I haven't filed any formal bug reports yet, but v0.26 provided by Ubuntu gives me some issues when dealing...
  24. [ubuntu] GTK3 Proposed Patch Version 3.22.25 & KDE Server Side Decorations Patch -- Included?

Hi friends. After an unsuccessful swing at the IRC channels, I'm trying my luck here to see if anybody else happens to be testing the particular scenario I'm looking at.

    It's no secret that Gnome...
  25. [ubuntu] Re: Curious about CPU % differences with SMplayer (with MPV backend) vs MPV standalon

Yeah - I've seen the quicklist in Gnome. I thought that was genius. Bravo. :) In regard to vaapi, it's difficult to tone it down after you've seen what vaapi is capable of, but perhaps I should...
