Solved by getting a new scanner.
This issue was solved by reinstalling Plymouth... or at least that's how I remember solving it.
I have since upgraded to 11.04 with a fresh install, and all boot graphics are perfectly fine.
Solution: Abandoned Deja Dup and I'm now using Spideroak services.

Solution: Installed "Unity 2D" from Synaptic. 2D works fine.
In the end, though, I decided to go back to Gnome. It's not that Unity is bad, it's just that it's not better enough to be worth the...
Solution: Gave up on trying to fix it and instead did a fresh install.
I gave up on trying to fix this and did a fresh install.
Works fine without any special settings.
Why a fresh install should work smoothly, and an upgrade should fail so miserably is beyond me,...

tredegar,
Thank you so much for your continued help.
Not that I am aware of. I certainly had no intention to.
piquat,
Thank you for joining the thread.
I don't know how to tell if the information from ping and the information from ifconfig are related. However, I'll do it again, with the pings first,...
tredegar,
Sorry, you're right, I didn't catch everything you suggested I try in post #22.
So... I tried powering down the working machine, and then I assigned that IP address to the misbehaving...
