    Managed to boot straight into desktop 5 times now, either by reboot, hard boot or reboot from Windows 8. No issues yet and hope it stays this way. The thing I indeed forgot to mention are the UEFI...

    Your remark about "the screen" made me realize there are more ways out of this laptop. I just hooked it up through the HDMI port to my television and consistently managed to boot into a graphics...

    As you seem to have fglrx-updates already there, just do:


    sudo apt-get install fglrx-updates

    If not installed, it will install the latest, if installed, it will update to the latest. Worked...
