    Re: GNOME Shell

Not sure, maybe newer GPU revisions have it. I'm using the 260.19.06 driver.

Anyway. When I set it to maximum performance, GNOME Shell is silky smooth all the time.

Re: help me get rid of ubuntu

So you used the wubi installer? If you did then you can uninstall Ubuntu via the usual way you uninstall software in Windows.

    Re: Linux Desktop Responsiveness Patches

Well Ubuntu uses a rather conservative setting in that regard. It's a balancing act really. You can set 1000hz in the kernel and enable preemptive desktop.

From what I can see, Ubuntu enables...

    Re: Fedora 14 - Laughlin

It's one of the most usable themes out there and it's default for that reason.I even find usability issues with the current Ubuntu default theme and themes like elementary will never be default...
  6. Re: Steve Jobs: "We donít see USB 3 taking off at this time."

Steve Jobs is many things but not an idiot. In the end he is talking about the Mac, not PCs.

PC manufacturers will probably have a different view.

    Re: GNOME Shell

It's probably because you have an old GPU, which doesn't support power management. I can set it to adaptive or maximum performance for my 9600GT.

I'm sure he doesn't care less. He'll care if New York Times bash him though, since he sucks up to them.

Re: Is Ubuntu One music store useful?

Yes, though it's nothing on the scale of Amazon and you seem to have to wait longer for new releases. I've brought tracks using Ubuntu One and it's a good idea.

    Re: Fedora 14 - Laughlin

    Just a few things:

Fedora is a pure FOSS distro and third party repos provide proprietary drivers and software(see rpmfusion).

Yes Fedora is more bleeding edge than Ubuntu/Debian, since they...
  13. Re: Steve Jobs: "We donít see USB 3 taking off at this time."

That's OK Steve. We PC users see it taking off, so you just stick to your Mac and catch up soon.

    Re: GNOME Shell

Just a note to NVIDIA users. Use maximum performance mode in the NVIDIA settings to get the best GNOME Shell performance.

Adaptive mode can make GS lag.

    Re: Ubuntu dropping KDE???

Canonical support Kubuntu. Ubuntu has nothing to do with it other that you can install KDE if you wish.

Re: Ubuntu shift away from Gnome - I don't get the problem

Well, to be honest, the "Linux for human beings" is just a marketing line and Canonical hasn't yet brought Linux to the masses.

Until we see proper market share figures to prove that, Ubuntu...
  19. Poll: Re: Unity to be included as part of the default desktop installation

Part of the reason is that the GNOME devs just don't have the manpower to do both ways. Canonical could just write an Xrender fallback for Mutter and be done with it, instead of what looks like a...
  20. Poll: Re: Unity to be included as part of the default desktop installation

That's doesn't make much sense. He says Mutter needs 3D support but yet so does Compiz. The only way Unity will drop back is back to metacity.

Unity's dock requires compositing like most docks...

    He must mean Unix.
  23. Poll: Re: Unity to be included as part of the default desktop installation

Dropping people back to the old layout if no 3D is found is rather strange and hacky.

Rather than sticking with one desktop, you have two different ones for 2D and 3D. It should be all or...
  24. Poll: Re: Is Gnome broken somehow?

You mean 3D since any system in the last 6+ years can support compositing, even my wife's old IBM Think pad can. What could happen in that you can drop back to software compositing like Xrender,...
  25. Poll: Re: Is Gnome broken somehow?

It can but you cannot expect developers to maintain a legacy version for a long time after, it's just too much work.

If someone wants to, do it.
