I usually convert to iso as well, it is a little tidier and an easy matter later to burn to dvd. Plus most better quality media player will play from iso...

Should not have to buy software for bd+ disks, on my own system I have had great success with makemkv which has a nice option to stream the bluray title (UPNP) so either MPlayer or vlc can playback....

Can you give the specs of the machine? The one I saw seemed more than capable of running Ubuntu...
Newer tvs are able to play a limited variety of media files directly from usb, I guess this is not the case with your tv? This gets around the whole transcoding issue...

Definitely worth hunting up one that can play Ogg Vorbis. When I was in the market for one of these devices Cowon was the name for multiple formats, perhaps this is still the same?

Won't take long to get used to the Linux way. Don't forget that the file structure and permissions are what makes Linux so secure, Windows is very 'open' and suffers because of this.
The developers have done a beautiful job and there are a couple of extra / reworked soundtracks that fit in very neatly with both games.
Well you may be interested to look at d1x-rebirth and d2x-rebirth which for me have been an amazing nostalgia trip back to my DOS days. Both games have weathered to decades well :).

Getting close! Hopefully we've cleared out most of the remaining issues
and are nearly ready here. We'll call this release...
The easiest thing to do is to use the checkinstall utility, if used judiciously this will integrate your package into the Ubuntu package management system.
You can do this with the MPlayer commandline:
mplayer -noborder my_file
where of course 'my_file' will need to be the name of your movie file.
