So I marked this as solved - updated post 1.
The daily server ISO + 3.14-rc4 has worked well. Ran the unit with the latest XBMC Gotham alpha and had no crashes or even bugs seen thus far...worked...
So I got server_daily.iso installed and just upgraded kernel to 3.14-rc4. The earth hasn't exploded yet so I consider that a good sign.
Questions I have is - is the ppa:kernel-ppa/ppa pretty much...
FINALLY got this thing put together within last hour, updated BIOS. Hit first roadblock, however, since all prior posts I've read on this suggest UEFI OS installation.
However, trying with a...

Apparently others using OpenElec have had success with kernel 3.14-rcX ... I'll aim for that too.
@VMC - no I have not, but thanks for info too....

I had to run fixparts on the drive as well, however, this is due to the fact that person who installed Win 7 (corp laptop) didn't completely nuke the Win 8 partitions. ...
1) install OS off of USB with LAN disabled.

3) carry on
13.10 has worked very well hw-wise, but yes there are crashes of applets, etc but main system very stable.
I managed to get VMWare 9.x working with some patches if that's important to you.
I'd give the boot-repair option mentioned here a whirl. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI
Dealing with the new EFI machines appears to be greasy at best. I think issue you may be facing is to...
@don-kozm0 - only thing I can think of is that bootloader didn't get installed properly or to right media. I had seen grub get installed to USB in older Ubuntu installs. OS installation went good and...
@sroutier - it's fast and everything works well on it using 13.10.
It is not of the same build quality, feature-set of a more expensive Enterprise grade laptop of course, but for $1000 you get a...

Turned NIC off and then booted off of USB. Was NOT an issue with any Linux distro just a quirk of the laptop.
Am now running 13.10 daily and everything works. Also had to stick with EFI boot ON,...
@oldfred - thanks for the reply.
Control video = NO. The Optimus setup is 'muxless' as I understand it so no way to specify this and/or change anything to do with video. I have a slightly older...
