    no, the root password is actually locked by default, its a security measure taken by ubuntu. Some other distro's leave the password unlocked.

    can you post the actual xorg.conf file for us?

    also if you run Xorg --configure under sudo, you should be able to generate a very basic, very general xorg.conf that should get the display working....

    that is the command to write cache to disk, but, as you found, it does not run under sudo, it needs root,


    su
    sync; echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches

    However, this takes your cache from RAM...
