If you have your data backed up you could always try to recover the system back to Windows. HP would probably make you do that anyway before sending the unit in for service if it is a video/hardware...
Is this a home router/firewall you are talking about? I have a Linksys WRT54G that will take only trickle updates through (300-400 bytes/sec), but I can torrent and surf and download at full speed....

You can specify a subnet mask I think by using the / option. like 192.168.1.0/25 is the same as 255.255.255.128 The 25 specifies the number of bits in the subnet mask.
Gigabit autodetects will switch accordingly. At least that holds true with every device/switch I have used. I only use my cross-over for 10/100.
Make sure you specify a new virtual hard drive. If setup correctly, each VM should not know anything about any other VM running.
Sounds like you tried to do your install and accidentally...
Turn off all your virtual machines you have running before you do the Windows 7 Install.
Did you check the virtualbox web site to see if maybe they have tips on installing Windows 7 RC?
I'm start you off by getting your interfaces correct. Edit the /etc/network/interfaces file. Change eth0 and eth1 accordingly.

You must have downloaded the DVD version of 8.04.
I have downloaded both the "live" as well as the alternate version and both are under 700M
BIND is the direction to go.
Look into using Webmin to setup your DNS server if you are having problems with the file(s) syntax.

You can only have one package manager open at a time. Synaptic can not be open with apt-get or aptitude is running from the command line.

I would honestly just do the installs from Synaptic. That's how I did mine.

This will make sure that your machine downloads all the header files about all the packages available.
