    Hard drives can be spilt into multiple low level ``files'' called partitions, each partition can be formatted with a file system (ext3/4 etc).

    On DOS/Windows, different partitions are identified...

    You can set up a system with two OS's and a shared data (not /home) partition. Have the bleeding edge OS on one partition and a stable OS on the other. then if something breaks in the bleeding edge...

    According to google, ntfs-3g also supports OSX. Its not ideal but it could be an option. IMO anything is better than FAT, have experienced some quite major data corruptions with this FS.

    Considered using a CF card and adapter? not done it myself but it has worked well for others (http://kmandla.wordpress.com/2010/07/22/poor-mans-ssd/) for example.
