    nfsstat
    I get statistics only for nfs v3


    my diskless client fstab has:

    10.0.0.1:/nfsroot / nfs,defaults 1 1

    As you alternate blocks and parity of the RAID SET, the resulting last few drives no longer...

    RAID is no substitute for backups.
    User discretion is advised.

    I don't understand how your RAID is being built using partitions from 2 drives, then raw devices from 2...

    not dmesg specifically.
    Check /var/log/dmesg.#.gz files... look for info in the log approximately the same date you had the symptom.

    I'm wondering if your modem is giving your network card...

    /var/log/dmesg would be a better place to look than /var/log/messages
    Check rotated logs, also.

    dd is overkill.

    Create the partition on your usb drive.
    format it:
    mkfs.ext3 /dev/sd*

    Copy your files over

    cp -ax source destination

    If you're wanting persistent naming with /dev/sda, sdb, sdc, etc...
    The only problem with UUID's is that it applies to partitions, not the whole device.
