Diablo II installation has worked just fine for quite a while AFAIK. I installed it earlier this year & didn't need to do any of the things you mentioned.

Yes, IMO the best frontend/GUI for MAME is QMC2. As for using the sixaxis, you have it right, QtSixA is a must.
You're trying to use a piece of software that has been long dead and no one supports it. Use the newer version SDLMESS.

Use Skulltag. IMO it's the best doom source port. It has the most options & has some of the most extensive multiplayer: http://www.skulltag.com/

When I used VBA-M last it started by default with a Qt GUI, but that was a while ago.
I thought VBA-m already had a Qt UI?
Any way, there is also Gambatte. Use either one of those two. They're the best and they're still in development unlike a lot of dead projects.

DON'T use xmame. It's been dead for years and requires a very outdated romset.
Use mainline mame.
For a frontend, use QMC2.
if you want the easiest to use with the least configuration required, use pSX.
if you want something that is more configurable, with plugins, use PCSXR (not PCSX).
