    For notetaking, you might also consider View Your Mind (vym). It's for drawing mindmaps, and I believe it's quite effective.

    The current version of eagle does not work with desktop effects. The bug has been reported, and will hopefully be fixed in the next version. You could try to set the following environment variable...

    I didn't notice until I read your message, but it seemes to be a problem on my PC too. A workaround that works for me is to press [Ctrl] key alog with [Alt] key.

    Just a couple of programs not mentioned yet:

    octave: A matlab clone. I have never used Matlab, so I can't compare, but octave seemes quite useful.

    qcad: Seemes to be a quite reasonable 2d cad...
