We're still doing quite well by the looks of things.
After yesterday's update to Flash this has started happening to me, too. hal packages were already installed, cleared the adobe cache too but got nothing as a result.

Before you reinstall (if you haven't already) could you try running Steam from a terminal and copy/paste the output in code tags on here? Knowing what's going on behind the scenes could help...
