Does have the port for Minecraft (default 25565) open? There shouldn't be any version incompatibility as Minecraft is entirely cross platform.

Before you reinstall (if you haven't already) could you try running Steam from a terminal and copy/paste the output in code tags on here? Knowing what's going on behind the scenes could help...
