UPDATE: I've managed to install 12.04 by sticking my hard drive into a friend's computer, and now my drive is back in my machine, and all is running well. I'm about to attempt the online upgrade to...
I wish you the best of luck, iokara. I'm experiencing the same issue. maybe the steps I've taken can help you. Here's a link to my thread on this topic...
I tried Linux Mint 17 last night, which is based off Ubuntu 14.04, and also recieved the
Warning! /dev/disk/by-uuidXXXX does not exist!
error. Given this many times recieving the same problem, I...
Okay. trying that method didn't even allow me to install. after every step, it gave me a warning saying that particular module could not be loaded, and did I want to try again, or skip. Yeah.
I'm trying to download Xubuntu directly through unetbootin now. I'm not hopeful this will work, but I believe in being thorough. Here goes.
Okay. After trying to install with that box left unchecked, now, after reboot, I am greeted by a black screen with the little text cursor flashing in the top left. I waited there for at least 5...
I apologize for the lack of clarity. I AM able to run a live session of various distributions (I have yet to find one that will not work live) and I am able to install. Install seems fine until...

Okay. I'd been using 12.04 ever since about august of '12. everything was going great, but I'd upgraded to the LTS every other cycle (10.04, 8.04, 6.04) since '06, so I was due to upgrade to 14.04....
I had the exact same issue, but with no luck. I ended up installing Lubuntu instead, then simply downloaded the unity interface. works like a charm now.
I am attempting to setup a wireless home network involving my computer (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS), My Brother's computer (******* 7) and my sister's PS3.
I setup the router, and created a network, and...
When your brother, who is an "IT Professional," and went to college to study computer repair still brings his laptop to you because he's totally lost.

You know it's too late when you watch "The Big Bang Theory," and realize that Dr. Sheldon Cooper is wrong.
Yes. I would prefer to use splash, because let's face it, we all love flashy stuff, but I'd rather have a computer that boots up.
Well, more than a week later, I believe I can mark this as solved. Thank you all for your help in solving this issue.
Well. removed "quiet" and "Splash" from boot/grub/grub.cfg.
it looked like a classic text-only boot screen for a while, but it still went to a gui login screen. worked perfect the first time,...

Uh oh. scratch my last post. sure enough, a day has gone by, and even with adding the sleep command, and doing battle with the evil dust bunnies from another dimension, the problem has come back....
So far, after following both hardware and software solutions, this thing is running like a champ again. I've gone through ten shutdown and bootup cycles trying to force the artifacts to come back,...
There could likely be dust. I haven't taken the thing apart since I first bought it (Used from a pawn shop. ugh.) I've inserted the command, and I'm about to take her apart to blast the evil dust...
For someone who has been happily using Linux since ******* ME came out, I'm feeling a lot like a noob here. this is the output from rc.local. where should I add the sleep command?

Okay. just ran into the same problem again. I was fighting for a good 15 minutes or so, booting on and off, trying to get to the login screen. since I disabled quiet boot mode earlier, I tried...
For some unknown reason, every once in a while, when I turn my system on, everything looks like it's going well until I get to the Ubuntu splash screen before the login screen. at that point, the...
