You could try installing Synaptic from the repositories if you don't have it. Synaptic is able to resolve broken package problems and you can probably install Cinnamon from there as well.

I'm not 100% certain but I believe they use the same package. You could download both and compare them, or you might be able to tell just by comparing the file names.
I'm not Chili555 but Tim Phillips has done yeoman work and produced a .deb package that seems to drive an RTL-8188CUS device perfectly. I'm using it with an Edimax device using the same chipset. ...
Winff is just a GUI for ffmpeg I believe. I'm not at all versed on various audio and video codecs, sorry.
Good, the one that says 'Printers-localhost' is more informative IMO. When I right-click the printer icon, I can verify that Enabled & Shared are checked. Left-clicking properties -> settings...
You should be able to install both ffmepeg & winff from the repositories. I just checked my 13.04 and have both installed. No need to make your life more complicated than it needs to be.
When you right-click on the printers icon, what does the title bar say, "Printers"? or "printers-localhost"? The app I find more infomative is the one that says "Printers-localhost". The newer app...
I believe Canon has gotten a little better with their Linux support. Not great by any means but better. If you're in N. America, you often have to go to Canon's Asian or European support pages to...
I am not at all familiar with Lexmark. Maybe uninstall, reboot then reinstall? You have two icons indicating problems. What happens if you right-click one? My version of Unity uses an informative...
maybe try disabling all add-ons then loading the problem pages. Or if you have SUDO privileges, create a new temporary user and see that that temp. account behaves any differently.
I'm not sure if it'll help but the 'classic' printer management app found in Xubuntu, Mint etc. is still around. From the repositories look for "system-confg-printer(-gnome)". If you can't find it...
Gnome 3 has irritants as installed. The extensions site referred to by fantab goes quite a ways to address shortcomings. Gnome 3 makes it easy to add "after-market" add-ons to address shortcomings,...
I have and would recommend maintaining an LTS install if you're at all concerned about stability. I haven't done a separate /home partition lately but a Linux install should fit in 25 GB. with space...
Here is a problem that has appeared in my 13.04 install since the latest image update. The wireless would work after resuming for a few minutes but would stop working. The wireless indicator would...
No one can argue with what works. I have a couple poorly formatted .docx files that I use for testing compatibility. Using LO4, I can open them with good fidelity. Using earlier versions of LO...
Nice detective work Oscar. No shortage of RTL8188 variants, is there? Perhaps your adapter supports 13 WiFi channels vs. 11 channels in N. America?
But the O.P. is talking about other life forms, not Homo Sapiens. To uneducated me, a "breed" seems very similar to "race". For instance, domestic cats are all members of the Felis Catus species. ...
I suspect that at least with notebooks (it's not practical to buy parts and assemble your own) this is the case. There are some functions - BIOS upgrades, hardware/firmware upgrades etc. that linux...
Tim is correct. Here is some information about your device:

Note the caution about multiple versions of the same model # using different chip...
If the 'powers that be' will accept .doc files, I'd use that over .docx. It seems that LO/OO do pretty well swapping .doc, better than .docx. You can set LO to save .doc by default if you wish to. ...
There haven't been the usual deluge of updates after the official release of 13.04. There were certainly enough prior to release though :).
I do the same. 13.04 is working very well for me but I have a 12.04 install for 'just in case'. I keep current backups of critical data files on an external device - or two. Reinstalling *buntu...
Have you installed *buntu-restricted-extras from the repositories? That will install codecs that are not open but required to play certain files. It will also install a few Microsoft fonts so...
Maybe go with 12.04 (assuming that works) and use PPAs if you want newer versions of some apps? I think 12.04.2 uses the same kernel as 12.10 and I'm sure you could find 12.04 original if you need...
I'm not certain but suspect that RT5370 USB and RT5390 PCI share similar if not identical circuitry. I have an RT5370 adapter. It works 'out of the box' but signal strength and connection speed...
