  1. [xubuntu] Thunar shortcuts are lost from time to time

My Thunar loses its side pane shortcuts from time to time. They just disappear after a system boot.

Just a wild guess: Maybe they are deleted when, as Thunar starts, the appropriate partitions...

[photography] Re: A batch job compatible Photo manipulator

The gThumb image viewer (package name: gthumb) has some basic batch conversion abilities.

And of course you could use ImageMagick to write a script, e.g. with Perl and PerlMagick. But this...

Re: Sansa Fuze - SanDisk supports Linux

And sound quality is very good (if you turn off all the sound 'enhancing' features like extra bass, mp3-enhancement etc). I even like it for instrumental jazz or classical music. I have been using...
  4. [SOLVED] Re: HOWTO fix: Thunderbird sends doc (MS Word) file source inline (weird characters)

A rather brute force alternative is to simply delete the mimeTypes.rdf file. You'll lose attachment actions that you defined if I'm not mistaken, but besides that Thunderbird will work perfectly...
  5. [SOLVED] HOWTO fix: Thunderbird sends doc (MS Word) file source inline (weird characters)

If you see huge amounts of rubbish in your sent emails (example below) when you send .doc attachments, try the following:

    go to ~/.mozilla-thunderbird
    open your profile folder (usually...

Software to convert gpx to svg?

Does anyone know a piece of software that converts gpx files (gps exchange format) to svg graphics files? Gpsbabel does not know svg.

I think it would be a fairly simple tool because both formats...

[xubuntu] HOW to rip CDs in listen?!

Maybe I'm dumb or blind... file:///usr/share/xubuntu-docs/musicvideophotos.html#music claims that the new standard music player in Xubuntu (listen) can rip CD. It says I should click on "Extract" -...
  9. [ubuntu] Re: How do I NOT automatically mount my encrypted Private folder at startup?

It did _not_ work. Graphical login was impossible. So I cannot recommend removing any of these two files.

Is there any (other) way to stop ecryptfs-xyz from auto-mounting the private directory?
  10. [ubuntu] Re: How do I NOT automatically mount my encrypted Private folder at startup?

I removed both auto-mount and auto-umount from ~/.ecryptfs, and then graphical logins were no longer possible! I typed my user name and password, had to wait for 10-20 seconds, and then the login...
  11. [all variants] Re: My home directory is accessible to other users?!

I did "chmod 700 /home/[username]". Now it seems to behave as I expected. I'll post again if trouble arises :-)
By the way: Much better data protection can be obtained by encryption:...
  12. [all variants] My home directory is accessible to other users?!

It's probably a stupid question, but why the hell is my home directory (/home/[username]) read/execute-accessible for all users?! (drwxr-xr-x)
This means concretely that the guest account can open...

  14. [gnome] Re: Nautilus: Can I turn off thumbnails in list view only?

hictio, I think this setting is the one you can also change under Edit-Preferences-Views.
And it's not what I want because I don't want to change the zoom level, but to completely turn off...
  15. [gnome] Re: Nautilus: Can I turn off thumbnails in list view only?

Bump. No one has an idea?
  16. [gnome] Nautilus: Can I turn off thumbnails in list view only?

I like seeing thumbnails in icon view (and I'm willing to wait a little for them to show up), but I really don't need them in list view. Anyway, I set them so small that they are completely...

  19. [xubuntu] xsane scanning very slow when switching from gutsy to hardy

I have an "Epson Perfection 1240U Photo" scanner.

  20. [all variants] Re: HOWTO: compile ffmpeg with mp3 support in Gutsy

@kostkon: Don't tell me all this fuss was completely unnecessary... No, of course, tell me so, thank you very much. I'll try this as soon as I'm back home.
  21. [all variants] HOWTO: compile ffmpeg with mp3 support in Gutsy

The task: I want to download funny movies from youtube etc. to my mobile music/video player (Cowon iAudio7, and also a friend's Cowon D2). The players need avi video files with mp3 audio in it.
