In 10.04, I did not try loading the driver explicitly, I hope to re-try it over the weekend and get back to you.

I too have the same problem as the original poster. i.e I can't connect to the internet and do not have an interface other than loopback.
However I am not sure how we can upgrade using pytheas22...
