You can also try things without the version number such as in a terminal type man gcc or gcc. This applies to most programs. You do not have to put the version number to start it.

Just to refresh my memory I just downloaded the .deb and right clicked the file and used ubuntu software center to install it. Installed and ran fine without having to do anything special.
