    It doesn't hang, it just takes... forever, like 2+ hours. It completed fine and I ran chkdsk last night so I guess we'll see how the chips have fallen!

    cheers Fred. No abnormalities in shutdowns etc on ubuntu so i'll assume it's the windows disc & give chkdsk a go from the recovery console on the xp disc.
    The errant XP disc can be mounted in ubuntu...

    i can: apt-get upgrade nvidia-xconfig
    did it. re-ran nvidia-xconfig, it backed up xorg.conf, but startx gives the same problem: API mismatch, kernel module version different to driver component...

    = no such process. looks like you don't need to delete it, the second command overwrites it. THANK YOU!

    more deduction: if i ping the router, 3 out of 4 packets return. if i ping 8.8.8.8, i get "network is unreachable".
    i'm still not getting SensiSenjei's tips to work, which i think have the potential...
