You could set that command to run on startup.

You can always install something light like fluxbox from a terminal (use alt-F3 to get to one), and then use that to open the system settings and change the effect back.
Not only that, the font rendering is massively improved. And when I say massively, believe me, it's a HUGE difference.

This is rather easy to solve. Download and burn the Super Grub Disk (google for it) and use that to restore GRUB. It should pick up the Acronis system and create a new GRUB menu for you.

It might just be NuoveXT with some of the icons manually replaced. By and large, though, it seems to be NuoveXT, so I'd say install that and then go from there.
