I cannot browse the network from Ubuntu, but I can see the ubuntu machines from the windows including file and printing.
Nautilus gives the following error:
Could not display "network:///"....

When giving the command "sudo /etc/init.d/smbd start" I get the message to use the service command. I have no idea what this means or is.

try adding
security = shares (or share)

I am having difficulty with samba also and in my searching I think others were having the same problem as you and the above line I think helped.
