I installed Ubuntu on a spare 450MHz P3 with 128 Mb only a week ago and it runs fine. XFCE sure helps though.

You need to
to get the program to compile rather than just installing gcc-3.4 as this also includes the required development libraries.
At least the program it managed to compile for me...
