Ok, did some more troubleshooting. Tried loading XFCE with GNOME services but it had no effect. Also, I was getting a "/dev/dsp resource busy" message so I tried this:
sudo killall esd
Then...
Works great, thanks. Plus, with a slight tweak to your script, I was able to add a root terminal as well.
