Interestingly hitting the speedtest download seems to cause the link quality and the signal level reported by iwconfig to plummet, which seems to indicate something a bit wonky is happening.

Weirdly I seem to be getting this issue with 10.04 and with an Intel chipset.
I had the exact same issue as this, the only solution I could find was to downgrade my linux-image-* package to revision 16 I think it was.
