for me...the binary driver works perfectly with 4311 in 12.10 and 13.04.
i also find firmware+b43 to be slow and erratic.

GDM is borked in 11.10 and breaks non-sequential upgrade via apt/dpkg. You should remove it and its deps before upgrading from lucid, maverick, etc..
Upgrading with the iso fixed the broken deps...
