I have a problem that occurs from time to time. Especially when fine tuning in ccsm sometime the Unity Panel messes up, it's then just a messy array of pixels, as if the resolution would be wrong....
For ATI Users, I just removed the graphical drivers, Desktop was fast again after that
Keep in mind that a lot of the functionality in unity is closely tied to the launcher.
Replacing the launcher would kill the usability of Unity, stick to Gnome2 if you want to use cairo.
Back to the Topics, I really didn't like Unity until I read trough the Power user's guide.
For me now it has ups and downs, but in General Gnome2 is getting old, I don't like Gnome3 ... so yeah...

I just turned off the ATI Proprietary GFX Driver, now the Window animations are running smooth... in both Gnome and Unity.. so I may even try out that weird new...
