I guess xadder suggest that you export the file from inkscape first as eps. But, I guess you can not use eps files with pdflatex. If you choose to export as eps, I think you have to run:
epstopdf...

Maybe Image Magick would be an option for the job. Open your image


display myimage.eps

Resize and export it as a eps file.

I have noticed the same problem. As a partial solution, you can use tex as Interpreter. However, you can't get any greek letters with italic style. :(

Yes, dvipdfm seems to be the way to go if your images are in eps-format and pdflatex in case of jpeg images. I wish there was some advanced method to include images. Now a user has to always consider...

Unfortunately, I don't know how to setup the background, but at least you can use beamer with jpg images. pdflatex is needed to compile.
