[ubuntu] Re: NO unity install after upgrade to 12.04

The ubuntu-desktop is a metapackage, and it includes alot more then Unity.

Is it safer to install then the single unity package?

[ubuntu] Re: NO unity install after upgrade to 12.04

    Try to reinstall unity:

    sudo apt-get install --reinstall unity

You can select installed desktop environments for use at the login screen. :)
  9. [ubuntu] Re: 12.04 Getting compiz working *with* special effects

I don't use anything but this laptop screen, so I don't have a monitors.xml. Sorry.

Also, I am stumped. I'm sure it has something to do with the upgrade from 11.10 > 12.04 :(
  10. [ubuntu] Re: 12.04 Getting compiz working *with* special effects

Sorry, I was asking what desktop environment you use. And you use Gnome Classic :). Try re-installing with:

    sudo apt-get install --reinstall gnome-panel

Also, are you still encountering that...
  11. [ubuntu] Re: 12.04 Getting compiz working *with* special effects

To get a feel for what you are using, I installed Gnome Classic and Gnome Shell:

    sudo apt-get install gnome-panel gnome-shell

I logged in, after selecting Gnome (Classic), and lo and behold -...

And I am not entirely sure what is wrong with your monitors, but have a look to see if you have this file:

    gedit ~/.config/monitors.xml
  13. [ubuntu] Re: 12.04 Getting compiz working *with* special effects

Yeah, that is the most recent driver from x-swats. :)

From the sounds of it your desktop environment isn't well suited to running with Compiz? I could be wrong, but I would assume your DE should...

I think na5h was just helpfully suggesting a workaround. ;)
  18. [ubuntu] Re: 12.04 Getting compiz working *with* special effects

It would be good if you installed the drivers from terminal, that way you know what you are getting (since you have added the x-swat ppa already):

    sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
    Otherwise,...

Check to see if your Pictures folder is correctly written in ~/.config/user_dirs.dirs.
  21. [ubuntu] Re: 12.04 Getting compiz working *with* special effects

For me, Compiz is very stable - I use the default Unity 3D and up to date Nvidia drivers!

But, contributing factors can de-stabilise almost anything, and for Compiz it is usually...

  23. [lubuntu] Re: Cannot change keyboard layout in login screen

You can set your keyboard defaults and alternatives with setxkbmap:

This sets your default keyboard layout to US, so at login you should be able to use those latin...
