  1. Re: In your opinion what is the the most promising hobby OS

Minix because it is well funded and is trying to fill a real niche (embedded control systems). Even more so now that QNX is owned by Blackberry.
  2. Re: Is C++ essential for employment opportunities

I'm going getting paid writing TCL code full time, so w/h. Really, who uses TCL anymore? :)

There is a general shortage of software developers in the world so if you learn anything well the...

    Re: national operating system-Linux base

Scientific Linux is government-funded, don't know if that counts. CERN and Fermilab!

Re: Adobe have killed AIR on Linux

I actually hope Adobe kills Flash for Linux too. Hear me out: if that would ever happen it would encourage Linux developers to work towards making an FOSS clone of Flash more vigorously.

    Even if...
  5. Re: Difference between Software engineering and computer science

People who major in Computer Science often end up as Software Engineers.

Some schools will let you major in "Software Engineering" and basically take less math courses.
  6. Re: MS Channeling Ubuntu's Artwork in Windows 8

    Microsoft, start your copiers! :P
  7. Re: Wayland, X, efficiency and system requirements

There is GTK+ and Qt ports to Wayland, so it will be possible to use Wayland instead of X.org quite rapidly. But, Wayland is far from usable or complete.

  9. Re: NASA To Host Open Source Summit March 29-30 In California

Very cool. :) NASA has a few open source projects already.
  10. Re: Do most professional computer scientists prefer to use Linux?

As someone who worked as a sysadmin for Linux and Windows PCs for awhile, I can say there is some truth to the first argument unfortunately. Managing a Linux desktop network can be challenging...
  11. Re: Do most professional computer scientists prefer to use Linux?

Probably less engineers uses Linux than Computer Scientists, but I would say more engineers use Linux than English majors.

This is how I see it (from personal experience):

    Most Linux use to...

Re: FOSS not going well in Germany

Wow. I hope people don't confuse you for a Canonical employee. :D
  13. Re: Do most professional computer scientists prefer to use Linux?

    I would say yes.

Linux is huge in academia and not just CS but physics and mathematics as well. Linux has an almost virtual monopoly on supercomputing at this point. :)

Re: Selfish or Heroic to come to work sick?

I think it's selfish. Because as others have said, you can infect your coworkers.

When you are sick you tend to be less productive, but your employer still probably pays you at the same rate.

  15. Re: Google will drop H.264 support from Chrome, herd the masses towards WebM and Theo

Please try to keep the debate civil.
  16. Re: Google will drop H.264 support from Chrome, herd the masses towards WebM and Theo

Actually both IE9 & Safari can support WebM natively using a easily installed codec. IE8 and below can support WebM with a plugin that replaces IE's rendering engine on demand (Chrome Frame). Neither...

  21. Re: How does microsoft fall under 50% market share?

Don't get me wrong - we can overtake Microsoft at the desktop. It just will take a long time and not be like the explosive growth Apple has had with their iOS line of products.

    Microsoft's execs...
  22. Re: How does microsoft fall under 50% market share?

Apple has the right idea, the trick is not to make Windows irrelevant, but make the PC itself irrelevant.

They start a new market with the smartphone and tablet that made them more money that...

Re: Canonical should write its own OS

The Mac OS kernel was perhaps it's biggest weakness pre-OSX. It didn't even support multitasking or threading in the sense we understand it today. Apple was very right to throw away that code and...
