You could try one of the Docks like Cairo, Docky or AVN.
Cairo preferences, position allows you to move it top, left, right, bottom.

Take that as things to come, try login as Gnome Classic.

11.04 using Gnome Classic runs pretty good.

I fired up a couple of these in a VirtualBox and liked XFCE also.
