    Hardware acceleration has come to Thunderbird too.

    Tools>Options>Advanced>General>Config Editor

    gfx.direct2d.disabled
    layers.acceleration.disabled

    Set both of these to True and restart...

    If you're using Firefox 3.6.14 this is a known problem and is being worked on by Mozilla.
