Workaround for some HP/Compaq laptops: change exec line in /usr/share/applications/dreamchess.desktop to Exec=sh -c 'SDL_JOYSTICK_DEVICE=/dev/null dreamchess'. Based on this page.
With regard to the 3d issue, first do not install that video driver from SIS. It's 10 years old and probably only works with obsolete kernels.
To see if the open source 3d graphics driver will...
Post #18 by timgood is the best thing since sliced bread. Perfectly resolves the Skype crackling on a 64-bit Lucid box.
I renamed /etc/motd.tail then ran:
sudo /usr/lib/update-notifier/update-motd-updates-available --force
And the motd appears fixed--for now. I'll post back in a few days if it acts up again.
Yes. I didn't notice it before.
Same problem has appeared on two of my Xubuntu 10.04 boxes (one i686, the other x86_64) within the last week. I regularly logon via ssh and use the motd to tell when to run update-manager.
One thing to try is add "nomodeset" to the kernel parameters. Edit /etc/default/grub and change the line starting GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= from "quiet splash" to "nomodeset quiet splash"

I modified /etc/gdm/Init/Default, adding the following line to the end:
/usr/bin/xmodmap -e 'pointer = 3 2 1'
exit 0 #this line should already be present
Important: this setting is global,...
Just an answer to an old post in case anyone needs it. If your drive names come up inconsistently, try the /dev/disk/by-id identifier. List long to find the symlink for your disk and use it in...
According to the ArchLinux wiki, "+" indicates an ACL (access control list) is in effect for a file. Several files get created with this designation, like /dev/sr0 and /dev/dri/card0, even without...
I'd like to know this as well.
What happens if you move the mouse?
If that doesn't work try ctrl+alt+f4 then ctrl+alt+f7. I'm not sure why this works, or how to bring back normal functioning.
Some sound cards, such as the cs46xx in my Thinkpad a20m, require a suspend script. I used this in /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/02Alsa in Hardy (don't forget to chmod 755 the script):
#!/bin/sh...
I have a workaround. Somehow Grub 2 interferes with the kernel creating the cpufreq files, yet they appear with Grub legacy--at least with the Thinkpad A20m. Sometimes you can't teach an old laptop...
The plot thickens. I burned the kernel to a CD and booting it allows the cpufreq directory and subfiles to appear . Powernowd along with the userspace governor then works normally (as...
I believe that Atom 330 has hyperthreading, so a dual core should appear to the operating system as four cores.
Anyway I'm also trying to get scaling with Xubuntu 10.04 on an IBM Thinkpad A20m,...
Yes.
Let the new X-server set up the "device" section. Below is the contents of my entire xorg.conf:
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Default Monitor"
Option "DPMS"
EndSection
The Xubuntu 10.04 gdm doesn't link up to gnome in quite the same way, so this method doesn't work:
after logging into ctrl+alt+f1
sudo -u gdm xfce4-appearance-settings
The interface...
